Mrs Leona Aglukkaq, the Minster of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister of the Arctic Council for Canada, visited the Fram Museum on January 19th as part of her trip to Norway.
Mrs Aglukkaq, a former resident of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, was particularly interested in the new Gjøa building, an entire building dedicated to Roald Amundsen’s expedition in the Gjøa, the exploration of the Northwest Passage and current issues facing the High North.
The new building houses Amundsen’s exploration ship, the Gjøa, which stayed in Gjoa Haven 1903-05.
The building and its new exhibitions will open for the public in the evening of June 12 this year.
In August 2012, Aglukkaq was honoured to be named the new Chair of the Arctic Council.
