Description

In 1893 the polar ship Fram sailed on her first expedition. She was constructed by the famous Norwegian shipbuilder Colin Archer, according to initial drawings by Fridtjof Nansen. She was especially designed to withstand the pressure of enormous ice masses in the polar regions.

The First Fram Expedition (1893-1896), which went across the polar sea was lead by Fridtjof Nansen. The Second Expedition (1898-1902) lead by Otto Sverdrup went to uncharted areas west of Greenland. The Third Expedition (1910-1912) was lead by Roald Amundsen. Fram brought him to the Bay of Whales from which he conquered the South Pole.

Fram was an important symbol for the Norwegian people during the period the union with Sweden was broken up. Fram had also played an important role in regard to Norway´s expansion and progress in the polar areas.

In this documentary we follow Fram from she was launched in 1892 until she was installed in her new home in the Fram Museum in Oslo. The film contains archive material and dramatic sequences.
