For Amundsen it was the culmination of a lifelong dream, almost 30 years after his first polar expedition as first mate on <em>Belgica <\/em>and 15 years after he reached the South Pole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had conquered the polar world on skis and snowshoes, dog sleds, four different ships, planes and finally a dirigible.
