ANTARCTIC PIONEERS -The Voyage of the Belgica 1897-99 The voyage of the Belgica under the command of Adrien de Gerlache set out from Antwerp, Belgium at the end of August 1897. It is one of the most fascinating of the early Antarctic expeditions and also probably the least comfortable one to have taken part in for all concerned. It is notable for being the first expedition to Antarctica of a purely scientific nature, and was the first time that anyone had over wintered in Antarctica. Amongst the crew was Roald Amundsen, later to be the first man to sail the North West Passage and also to reach the South Pole. This book tells the amazing story of the Belgica Expedition and the crew of the Belgica’s struggle for survival in the Antarctic pack ice. It is fully illustrated with Roald Amundsen’s personal collection of photos from the expedition and contains several excerpts from his diary. The book includes Emile Racovitza’s funny hand drawn commentaries on the life onboard, Roald Amundsen’s diary illustrations, a section on other pioneering expeditions to Antarctica, and the story of the Belgica.
