Description

Robert F. Scott (1868-1912)

Robert Falcon Scott was a British officer in the Royal Navy and an explorer who led two expeditions to Antarctica, first on the Discovery (1901-04) and later on the Terra Nova (1910-12).

On his first expedition, he set a new southern record by marching to latitude 82ºS. On his second expedition he led a party of five which reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, less than five weeks after Roald Amundsen and his men.

Returning from the South Pole Scott and his four companions Edward Wilson, Lawrence Oates, Henry Bowers and Edgar Evans perished.

In his final diary entries Scott wrote “Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which should have stirred the heart of every Englishman.”
